The Reality..."So, You Do Daycare?"

One of the most popular questions that we get asked by strangers is, "So, you do daycare?"

The first time it happened, an older neighbor lady who we've never met was walking by our house and stopped to talk to Sam. She asked, "How is the daycare going?" To her surprise he told her that those are all of our kids. She responded, "oh, it seemed like more. I must have counted wrong." When he told me, I laughed thinking of how the neighbors think we have a daycare. However, I can see how they could think that without knowing our family.

Then the other day at the gym when I checked-in with all of my crew it happened again. I'm the only one on the membership and the kids all go into the supervised play area while I work out. (The gym is definitely losing money on my membership! :-) We had come in a few days and I could tell that the woman thought we looked suspicious. You can't miss my crew as we walk in. By the third day she had figured out a way to ask, "and these are all your kids, right?" Yep, I politely answered.

Recently we updated something on our internet and the technician had to come into our home. We paused to talk about our connection problems in the dining room. To which I realized he wasn't paying attention and instead said, "I just came here for the coffee as he pointed up."

We both smiled and I felt horrible for not offering him some but the regular brew was already cold. Then after walking through the rest of the house (and seeing two of the kids downstairs) he said, "So, you do daycare?" Again I just smiled and replied, nope. These are my kids.

I don't mind the questions and I don't get offended. People are just trying to figure out who is part of our family. We don't all look alike but family is about who you claim not about who you look like. Now that I've had lots of time to practice being asked this question my answer now might sound like, "Nope, we are blessed they are ALL ours."

  2. Hey married to a biracial man and having two Bio kids that look very different gets all kinds of comments..... mostly its witch one is yours and are you babysitting? But I even get the the " oh different dads, right?" Its interesting what people are willing to ask. I try to be polite bit some days it catches me off guard. I still have to smirk when I explain to medical folks that my blonde haired blue eyed boy is 1/4 African Amer... they usually don't believe me. ;-) -becca

    1. when growing up the way I did all my sibling had different dads I used to think automatically if they looked different prob diff dads, but then i came to BCF and was like that's not always the case. it is so very sad that our society jumps to conclusions. I know that just because look different it doesn't mean any thing. hey who knows ur blond haired blue eyed buddle of cuteness may tan better then his brother.

    2. Becca,

It is funny how questions can catch you off guard even if you realize why people come up with them. I love that your adorable little boys keep every one guessing. :-)

  3. Great stories, thanks for sharing!

It reminds me of before I had my son I did After School Chilcare. I usually picked the kids up from school and we headed to the grocery store on the way home. People never asked if I did Day Care. Perhaps it was more polite to just assume that they were mine. But they looked nothing like me. I'm Caucasian and they are 1/2 Caucasian and 1/2 Asian so of course the Asian traits shine through. So I was kind of surprised that people asked you if you did Day Care. I wonder if in some cases the number of kids you have just throws people off. I wouldn't mind having a big family one day...and people think I'm crazy! But that's a different story I suppose...

    1. Amelia,

Your experience is really interesting. I think you are right that most people probably question if we do daycare based on the number of kids that we have.

  4. When my daughter had seven kids (she now has 11!), one day the police came knocking on her door and said it was reported that she was running an unregistered (and therefore illegal) day care center in her home! Her most frequently asked question is "Are these really all yours?"
