Being Stretched Along The Way

It just kind of happens with parenting, doesn't it? You think that you can only handle so much and then you find that somehow you were stretched along the way.

Your kids grow and you grow and you might look back at where you first started and say, wow.

Think back to that first moment that you became a parent. You had no clue what to do next but with each small step you found your way.

being stretched as parents

When I was pregnant with our youngest son I had no clue how we were going to make it work to go from one toddler at home to possibly adding four more kids into the mix

With each passing day some drastic stretching has taken place.

We have had some great help along the way

However, for the first year I honestly remember being scared to death to be with all five of our kids by myself. I was sure that I wasn't going to make it out alive. It took both Sam and I months to master an assembly line to bath the kids, trim their nails, brush their hair, brush their teeth and successfully get them into bed at a decent time.

It was never my first choice to take any of the kids to the grocery store with me...I already had a dislike for grocery shopping without trying to make it work with kids in hand.

And then one night about a month ago, in an attempt to let Sam rest, I bathed all five kids by m.y.s.e.l.f. The day before Sam and Naomi left for Mexico I cut two of the boy's hair by m.y.s.e.l.f. (usually it takes Sam and I tag teaming to make the free barbershop thing work in our house.)

Today I was about to make a quick trip to the grocery store while Grandma and Grandpa held down the fort during nap time. My seven year old son asked if he could come along. With tremendous joy I said, "sure...let's go!" I even surprised myself with that answer

We had a wonderful time and picked up some flowers on sale for $2.99 along the way.

This week as Sam and Naomi are experiencing memories that will last forever, I'm taking the opportunity to remember how far I have come and to embrace the stretching.

I want to rejoice with each passing day.

responsibility charts

You better believe that after using those responsibility charts successfully for the past 18 months, I'm not going to let one week at home without dad stop our momentum. :-) I will however be counting down the days until two very important people in our family return, but I will also be remembering how beautiful the stretching has been and how thankful I am for where I am today.

How have you been stretched along the way? Are you able to look back at something that you once thought was hard and now it looks a little different?
