I'm Back In School!

As a wife, stay at home mother of five and writer, photographer, administrative assistant, & creative mind behind An Inviting Home, going back to school full-time would be more than this lady could handle. However, when my friend Jackie from Teal & Lime launched her first Define Your Style E-Course I was thrilled to enroll.

Taking an online course for 5 weeks that would help me finally narrow down my decorating style...sign me up!

I'm all about learning more about your passions.

Decorating is definitely one of mine and up until this point anything that I've done in my home has been solely based on personal preference. My major in college was Biblical studies...they never mentioned anything about window treatments or paint colors. :-)

If anyone were to ask me what my style is, I would say eclectic. Although that can be confusing, especially for me. I'm drawn to modern things and a mix of other styles as well. Saying eclectic gets me off the hook of having to label my style deeper than that but it doesn't really help me know what I love most when it comes to decorating.

With an eclectic style I could like anything. :-)

We are two weeks into the class and I am learning so much! I'm beginning to narrow down a few things that are really important to me when it comes to decorating.

I thought I would share a few of my personal revelations with ya'll. I can't wait to get to the end of the class and be able to fully define my style.

Here are some of the things that I am noticing are a pattern in my decorating.

1) I like things that are comfortable & inviting.

Does that come as a surprise? :-) I want our home to be a haven for each member of our family. I love creating spaces in our home that allow us to enjoy every moment here. I also love having a warm and welcoming space for others.

If I had my choice I would curl up on the couch by the fire with a warm mug and a soft blanket.

I recently found a great new blanket at Target.

It is warm & snuggly...comfortable & inviting, perfect.

2) I like pops of color among a neutral pallet.

I love that our home had white trim when we moved in. I like having neutral furniture and then adding in color with things like pillows and accessories. All of my personal spending money seems to go to Target for things like this new teal & white pillow that I recently found.

3) I love things that are simple & inexpensive.

I've discovered that I do a lot of DIY stuff not because I always love the process, or because it is convenient with the time that it can take to do a project, but because it is the best way to try new things and make it work all within our budget.

Yet, even if I could spend more on decor items...I wouldn't. I like that we don't have expensive things around otherwise I can see myself totally being uptight about the kids ruining something. Anything in our home is replaceable and like the frame says...What I Love Most About My Home Is Who I Share It With.

I recently came up with this inexpensive centerpiece for a brunch that I was going to. I found all of the supplies at the Dollar Tree and created two for a total of $6.

It has now found a place in our bathroom and brings a nice pop of color to the space.

It is inviting, brings a pop of color, is simple and inexpensive...totally me! :-)

I am excited for all that is still to come in Jackie's wonderful class.

Currently enrollment is closed for future classes but you can check out this page for updates on her future classes and I'll be sure to post info in the future as more classes open up! How many times can you say "future" in one sentence?! ;-)

What would you say are some of the things that you love most about your home? Would you be able to Define Your Style?

Want to stay connected? Check out these great ways!
