Monthly Budget Breakdown ~ September 2013

In an effort to challenge my contentment meter and stay within a budget,
I have $50 per month to spend on Decor & DIY projects for around the house.
On the first Tuesday of every month I'll show you how I spent it.

Here is the monthly break down for September...

Starting Balance = $46.37 (you can check out here to see what was spent in August.)
Income: September $50 + Starting Balance = $96.37 left to spend

September was a fun month with getting back into the groove of school for the kids and making a few changes around the house.

First up, I showed you how I added some inexpensive bins to the boys room to house their rock collections. They love those little things! The cost was $4.99 for the 3 pack at Ikea.

When it came to fall decorating at first I got swept up with some things that I saw others doing online. I can relate when other bloggers say that sometimes it seems as though you have to decorate for every holiday and have new decor every year. However since that isn't what I would do in normal life, then I made the decision that I would still choose things within my budget and not decorate for every holiday.

In the end, I was excited to add some new pieces to my fall decor but didn't want to go crazy. I actually returned an acorn candle stick that was absolutely darling but was putting my budget too high for this little fall mantle

In the end, I kept this acorn that I found at HomeGoods for $6.99,

and this owl (that could be used any time of the year) for $14.99 from HomeGoods.

It was great getting to tie the rest of the mantle together by using decor that I already had on hand and by making a free banner with supplies from home.

I was trying to save most of my budget to finish off our new gallery wall. Over the past five months I have been waiting for all of the pieces to come together.

I found the 5x7 frames at Target (on sale) in packs of three for $4.99 each. I bought three packs.

I was still missing a few key pieces and ended up finding the "Love Lives Here" sign also at Target for $19.99.

The other canvas piece came from HomeGoods for $14.99. I also used two 11x14 frames that I got at Ikea for $1.99.

I used my home printer to make the quotes in the 11x14 frames and I developed the eight, 5x7 pictures at Walmart for $1.47 each. If I had been more on top of my game I could have ordered the pictures to be mailed to me instead of one hour and the price would have been cheaper.

Finally, I spent $6 at Dollar Tree to create two of these beauties

Final Breakdown...
Beginning Balance $96.37 - ($98.66 September purchases) = $-2.29

Phew, just over by a few dollars! Someone recently asked me why I put together this monthly post. Honestly, they are a bit of work to keep my receipts and remember where things were purchased. However, I needed a way to be accountable so that I could enjoy decorating/organizing and blogging all about it while still staying within a budget. With the various amounts spent on each project, I am hoping to inspire others, so that even if you only have a few dollars to spend you can bring beauty that you enjoy into your home.

Have you gotten any fall projects done around your home?

  1. I get jealous sometimes, as I read post after post by bloggers with seemingly limitless budgets to craft and decorate and do.things. This dose of reality is encouraging to me. Thanks for sharing.

  2. This was interesting! I like to decorate on a budget too, although for me it translates into making or re-purposing things.

I think a lot of people forget that there are a great many DIY/Home Decor bloggers that make money from blogging so they have more money to use to decorate and they decorate early and for every holiday because that's their job. ;)

    1. Manuela,

Thank you so much for mentioning what you did. You are SO right that many bloggers decorate & inspire because it is their full-time job. I shouldn't have worded things the way I did above, forgive me!
