Is Having 7 Spatulas Really Necessary?

Last week I was preparing food to take on our family vacation knowing that the place we would be staying had a kitchen. It was advertised that it was "fully stocked" with pots and pans, baking sheets, dinnerware & cooking utensils.  I wasn't exactly sure what that meant it would have or wouldn't have when it came to cooking utensils.

It was on that trip that I had a great epiphany!

I remember opening up the utensil drawer and thinking, there is hardly anything in here. Surely they are missing something. Over the course of the next three days I prepared multiple meals and not once was I "missing" something.

What a refreshing feeling to have such an open drawer!

Upon returning home I quickly did a scan of our utensil drawer...yikes!

Too many utensils in the drawer

I knew that there were a few things in there that I never used but I was more curious to find out how many multiples of things I had that I did use.

My discovery was shocking!

multiple utensils

Instantly all I could think of was...

Is Having 7 Spatulas Really Necessary?

I decided right then and there to only put one of each utensil back in the drawer. I bagged up the rest and put them in our basement closet for safekeeping. I'm doing a little experiment to see if I miss anything before those items are given away.

is having multiples of kitchen utensils really necessary

So far I haven't missed a thing and it is so refreshing to be able to find what I need when I open that drawer, not to mention that it's a huge time saver because things aren't hidden by the clutter but instead I can instantly find exactly what I'm looking for.

If you had to guess, how many spatulas are in your utensil drawer?

  1. I have 3... Maybe 4. I also have at least 5 wooden spoons and 2 egg flips. I think the reason is because that way you have a spoon for each dish that's cooking and spares for when those are in the dishwasher. I want to know why I have so many butter knives?? I swear I have double the number of knives than any other piece of cutlery in the drawer :-)

    1. Erin,

Isn't it funny what we find we have so many of. Butter knives...interesting. :-)

  2. I just cleaned out our utensil drawer too - it was bit insane in there. And honestly, I could probably get rid of more. I mean - I've never used the potato masher, but can't help thinking I will need to one day! Crazy.

    1. Carrie,

Too funny! I am on the fence about keeping my potato masher too. ;-)

    2. A potato masher is essential in our kitchen! Not only we we really enjoy the chunky "home style" mashed potatoes you get with a masher, but they are also good for smashing strawberries for strawberry shortcake! Which is a favorite summer dessert for our family too. When I hear of people not using them, I just can't help but think, "Why not!?" :D

    3. Naomi,

Great idea to use it for smashing strawberries...I would have never thought of that.

    4. We use the potato masher with homemade playdough a lot too! Maybe just relocate it to the playdough bin :)

  3. Spatulas? I have 4, each a different size, and I use them for different purposes. I'm a bit of an organizational freak in my kitchen drawers, because I want to be able to find everything I need almost blindly. I have quite a few kitchen utensils, but I do use them all, especially when I do freezer cooking/baking.

    1. Juf,

That is great that you are able to utilize everything so well! I probably should have mentioned that I'm not much of a cook which is why for me...seven seems a few too many. :-)

  4. I did this once but a little different. I set a box on my counter with every utincel I owned in it (minus cutlery) and then left it there for a month as I used things out of the box they got put away properly and I think I ended up with 2/3 of all my things staying in the box. Then I donated all those unused things. Felt so good to have space in my kitchen!!! -becca

    1. Great idea! I have so many cooking utensils that I sometimes have difficulty closing the drawer. I'm going to try your box idea. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. I have two spatulas for the stovetop, and I use both of them. It's nice to have two, so I can trade them out or have both to use if I'm cooking to appropriate things at once. I have three rubber spatulas (and I would like to have a fourth, very small one for scraping out jars). I also have one small metal spatula that I use for scooping things our of baking pans. Paring down is wonderful!

    1. Harper,

I recently bought a small spatula for jars. You are so right that it is nice to have multiple ones for different purposes.

  6. I did my utensil drawer last year and it has lasted this whole time- I think because I invested in seperators for inside the drawer so everything really does have it's own space (or maybe it bunks in with a couple of other related tools, but they certainly don't all slide together anymore). I love opening that drawer!

  7. I recently got rid of a bunch of extra kitchen stuff when I reorganized my kitchen, its much more simple to just have a few necessary items.
