Simplifying Your Makeup Bag

simplifying your makeup bag

Lately I have been looking at every area in our home with new eyes. Do we really need this? Is this necessary?

Will I even notice if I don't have this?

In regards to my makeup bag...yes, I would notice if it wasn't there. However, I was amazed at how many eye shadows I had in my make-up bag for the, "just in case I ever decide to use this color even though I NEVER do" moments.

I guess I'm finally noticing that after 15 years of powdering my nose, my preferences haven't changed much. I still use pressed powder instead of liquid foundation and I don't travel far from home without a little black eyeliner.

Yet with all of the extra stuff that was taking up real estate in my makeup bag, it only meant one thing. Every time I went to go grab the same things that I always use I had to go searching through all of the things that I don't use.

Once it dawned on me what was happening, I immediately took my bag to the table and dumped it out.

I then sorted out my every day, go to items...we are talking basics people.

And I even left a few extras items in the mix for when I occasionally "go fancy!" That is right, I don't waste my Revlon lipstick on just any old day.

And because I am suddenly fine with only keeping the things that I actually use in my makeup bag, I got rid of all of the other random (read "REALLY old") stuff that was taking up space and making me have to dig every single day!

I even downsized to a smaller bag. These are the little joys that make the fact that sometimes I go days without even opening this bag up totally worth it! You should have seen the smile on my face this morning as I got ready for the day...wait a minute I didn't even open this bag today, or brush my hair, problems.

What is the current state of your makeup bag?

  1. I completely gave up make-up a few years ago. Now I'm really glad I did...some days I barely get my hair brushed (and don't even get me started on the condition of my eyebrows recently).

I love how you're looking at even the little things in your home and purging and prioritizing. I've been doing this a lot recently. Today I'm going through the desk drawers. I'm sure I'll find a small mountain of items I have for those just-in-case moments that have yet to happen :)

  2. I've never been an everyday make-up person & didn't have too much until I started only buying make-up when Clinique has their bonus items events so now my stash has gotten a little out of control :) I now have one bag full of make-up & one bag full of lotions & potions, but it's all stuff I like. Last year I found this company called zpalette through instagram & they make magnetic pallets where you can take your products out of their bulky plastic compacts & put them all together in one smaller container. I'm not affiliated with them at all, but I just think it's the coolest thing because now I can have my eye shadows & blushes (you can even put lipsticks!) all together in one simple case instead of all their individual ones.

  3. Just found your blog from the Work it Wednesday blog hop! SO GLAD I DID! I'm excited to be following you along now via Bloglovin! :)

    1. Thanks, it is so great to have you here! :-)

  4. Cream foundation, brown eyeliner, blush (used as blush and eyeshadow often), black mascara, one lip color that one has a use or two left and I've been unable to color match, and one lip gloss I use daily. That's it. I downsized to this after college graduation (eons ago).

  5. I really need to do this! Thanks for the motivation! :)
