My Secret To Feeding Unexpected Guests

For ten years Sam and I have been inviting people into our home. Sometimes those times have been planned out ahead of time and sometimes they are completely last minute.

So, today I'm going to share one of our secrets: Early on I learned that it was really important to have at least one staple item on hand at all times for unexpected guests.

Well, make that two items:

Chips & Salsa

I've found it really helpful to keep a bag or two of chips on hand at all times. It is one of the easiest things to take out, serve quickly and satisfy many.

Not to mention that it is inexpensive.

Nowadays, with many people having special dietary needs it also easily caters to some of those. This is also one of the few things that you can buy organic/gluten free and not have to pay an arm and a leg for. In fact, I found that the prices of organic/gluten free chips were almost identical to regular chips...win!

Unopened bags also stay fresh for months.

We usually buy salsa in bulk at Sam's Club...it is one of our family's staple items.

Sometimes I'll splurge and buy the fancy salsa. Pineapple, peach salsa...YUM!

Inviting friends over has never been easier. I can guarantee you that most people aren't coming over to your house in search of gourmet food. They simply want to hangout. The nice thing is having something simple on hand that you can enjoy together!

At the end of our time together I simply place the leftover chips in one of our pantry containers. Tortilla chips never stick around very long with my crew.

Our unexpected guest nights usually turn into a night of chips & salsa...a little Ticket To Ride or Settlers of Catan and glorious memories are made! The winner even gets to sign the box...I love signing the box. ;-)

Do you have any favorite items that you like to serve when friends are over?

  1. Great idea! I would have such a hard time with unplanned guests. I would love to see a post on how you handle/manage that. =)
