Stair Containers To Collect The Clutter!

stair mailboxes to collect the clutter

Recently I confessed how much having clutter in our home affects me in a negative way. Ya'll were so encouraging and I'm so thankful that it isn't a battle that I am facing alone.

I also recently switched out our old stair mailboxes that really help with reducing clutter in our home. The previous ones that we used had wires in them that had started poking through.

Stairs + wires poking through + kids = a disaster waiting to happen!

However, after three years of constant use, I can't even imagine not using this system. So I was thrilled to find some new containers at Target.

More than the containers though, I am simply thrilled with how beneficial this system has been for our family.

Sometimes you just need a place to toss the "in between" things to help reduce the clutter.

bins on your stairs to help organize

Sometime soon I'll share our method of getting the kids to pick up their toys at any given moment (it isn't mind boggling but it has been effective and I'll share that soon!) However, these bins play a big role in it. Many times the kids will pick up by putting items in here that need to eventually go back upstairs. Other times cleaning up includes emptying their "mailboxes" and taking what has collected back upstairs to their rooms.

That is usually the case when they start overflowing and nothing more can fit in them!

I didn't go fancy with labeling the containers...just a quick sharpie marker to the side knowing that in the future I can always use a little rubbing alcohol to remove the name if I ever want to re-use the bins for something else.

organizing with kids

I honestly can't say enough good things about this system.

Even if you don't have stairs you could have a designated container somewhere in the house for each member of the family to drop their things into. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to put everything back in its place all of the time...but having a little container like this can be a great inbetween place to put things and help keep chaos at bay.

Do you have a designated place in your home for putting each person's things? What kinds of methods do you use to help keep the clutter at bay?

    1. Jami,

I did just recently purchase these from Target. However, I didn't see them at every Target store near me. The one that I found them in they were in the laundry basket aisle.

  2. Oh I would love to have a "put away later" bin...but then would I actually put away later? That part scares me a bit!

    1. Jessica,

The thing that I have found nice about it is that I get to decide when a good time is to put the gathered things away. The same thing with the kids...it isn't always convenient for them to run that one random toy back up to their room but I can at least have them put it in their bin to put away later. You'll eventually go looking for something you might need that is in there or at the very least you'll know where to go looking if something isn't where you usually put it. Once things are overflowing onto the stairs I'm generally motivated to take a few minutes and empty the bin. So maybe the key is finding the right spot in your house that forces you to eventually put the things away. ;-)

  3. Any suggestions for a ranch style house? It can be so HARD to get items all the way to the other side of the house or even off the drop zone (aka) kitchen table. Thanks for the laundry inspiration. It motivated me to change ours up! The sort method AWESOME! My kid unfold the clothe anyway when they put it in their dressers:)

    1. Melissa,

Hi friend! Glad the sorting laundry method is working for you guys! For a ranch style house I would just suggest finding a central and convenient place to put some bins for each of the kiddos, your hubby and yourself. Maybe on the opposite end of your bedrooms or in your living room, etc.

  6. These baskets are super cute and I'm not surprised you found them at Target. Target has an awesome selection of everything home! This is a great system, too. I don't have stairs in my home but I could definitely use it in some other way. Thanks for sharing!

  7. I love this idea! I hate all the clutter that accumulates on our stairs waiting to be put away!

  8. I love this idea. I tried something similar a while back but my husband insisted they were too dangerous (our stairs are not as lovely and wide as yours). I'm still looking for a way to incorporate the idea somewhere (possibly putting the baskets in a unit in our hallway.) I have to confess there is usually a pile of stuff waiting to go upstairs but it always amazes me that no-one else in my family seems to be able to see it!! ;-)
